Tough Times Make For Character

Feb 9, 2009 at 12:00
Everyone is having it tough. It is not just the world of electronics; it is tough for everyone except, perhaps, fast-food chains, thrift stores and pawnbrokers.

When I was a kid it was assumed, if you were from a moneyed family (I was most certainly not) or if you had an inherited title in your lineage, that you would go to boarding school. Your parents expected the dormitory life, cold water showers, harsh discipline and lousy food to toughen you up so that you could all the more appreciate the good things in life.

Almost all of us are going through that kind of back-to-basics scenario now. But at EN-Genius we will still strive to go beyond just the basics with real editorial coverage, weekly publication, and expert credibility, even through these gloomy days. That is because we realize that you need us in order to turn out the top-notch technology that will play a role in un-digging the deep economic hole we are all in. And we in turn need you: to share your message with the industry on this site, yes...but just as importantly to keep us focused and remind us why we do what we do in the first place. It is a big picture, but it is one we are all part of and all have a vested interest in seeing first stabilize, and then once again thrive and grow.

While we at EN-Genius don’t feel that the corner to recovery is even in sight, let alone turned, we remain committed - as individuals and as a site dedicated to serving the nucleus of the technology sector, the design engineer - to maintaining quality and integrity in everything that we do. Because doing so is the only way for our business, or yours, to deliver long-term value to our industry.

A CEO at one of our vendors wrote to me a short while back urging that we both continue taking our antidepressants. Flippant advice, perhaps, but not so impractical as we boldly go forward into an environment that is more challenging than most of us can remember in our lifetimes. To those out there who have already been laid off, and to all those who are in fear of the same happening to them, we can only offer our best wishes and luck. But, please, do your best not to despair, as we are also striving to do. That "big picture" may need some serious restoration work, but the right curator for the job is in the People's House, and this is a storm that we can outlast and emerge from stronger, so long as we hang together.
