PLAC 100: User-Configurable Planar Transformer Features Frequency Range of 50 kHz to 400 kHz, Handles up to 220 W for SMPS Applications
Vishay Intertechnology Inc. announced a versatile new planar transformer designed for switchmode power supply (SMPS) applications, including flyback, forward, push-pull, and half-bridge converters.
Delivering a high level of flexibility, the new Vishay Sfernice PLAC 100 is user-configurable with software supplied by Vishay, which allows designers to adapt the transformer to a wide range of applications by setting the power supply type and desired level of input voltage, output voltage, power, and frequency. Once these variables are entered, the software does the rest of the work, automatically determining the appropriate configuration and determining which outputs should be connected to obtain the best performance.
EN-Genius Says…
The most difficult component to specify in just about any SMPS or dc-dc converter application (where you cannot get away with just a single IC) is the magnetics. For many designers it means an in-house design with a specialty vendor providing a fairly expensive product. When there are multiple projects underway, that is a logistical nightmare for designers and buyers.
The Vishay Sfernice PLAC 100 takes away a huge amount of that load. It provides a transformer that has twelve windings, six of them with one turn and six with three turns. The combination of these windings, selected using a software program, allows an incredible range of discrete solutions to be available.
The one turn windings have a nominal inductance of 7 µH (at 10 kHz) and a resistance of 3 mΩ; the three turn windings are, likewise, 63 µH and 35 mΩ. The lowest cross-potential between windings is 300 Vac with powers up to 220 W.
The frequency range of operations is from 50 kHz to 400 kHz making the transformer suitable for a huge range of SMPS applications. Both SMD and through-hole versions are available in packages less than 38 mm x 35 mm.
The PLAC 100 is in production and is packaged in 15-piece lots. The software design support kit comes complete with six through-hole transformers and is PC compatible. The software is directly executable and is in both English and French. No pricing was disclosed, but Newark shows a price for 1–24 kits at an astonishing $7829.73 each!
