The End of Engineering

The challenge in physics has increasingly been one of finding a simple, ultimate, unified-force theory, a theory tracing all physical effects back to an initial (or, for philosophers, a final) cause. Books and articles have been written about the achievement of this goal as the “the end of physics” or “theories of everything.” Theological language and talk about God have even been invoked by leading physicists to emphasize the ultimacy of the intent. Is there a corresponding challenge in engineering?
