Apollo Has Gone
by Paul McGoldrick

I wrote a couple of months ago about our sick little boy cat, Apollo, who at one time was awarded a doctorate from a fake university.

A few mornings ago I awoke to a most awful cry of pain. Our dapper Apollo died on my right hand a few minutes later.

Our vet sent flowers and a sweet card. Dozens followed his story on my wife's Facebook page and poured out love and encouragement in his direction (and ours). Yet, even when you know what is to come, a void that can never be quite filled remains behind.

Apollo has moved on, and so must we. How better to do that than by giving another animal in need the opportunity for a "forever" home? When we brought Apollo's unused medications and his remaining food back to the vet for credit and as donations to the Victoria Pet Adoption Society  this week, we met a black-and-white kitten with a super-easy disposition and an instantaneous purr. As with Timbit - who has settled in beautifully - the adoption application was comprehensive, and approval came the following day. Pixel, as we will call him (he had been temporarily dubbed "Reese" by VPAS, but that just didn't sound like him...), will be joining the family sometime in the next week. Our amazing vet is putting all the cats in the adoption room through a course of antibiotics to clear up a respiratory malady that had them all sneezing like a daycare's worth of toddlers.

May you and your companions, human and animal alike, find peace and contentment in this new year.
