The Value Of Traceable S-Parameter Characterization Of Electro-Optical Components
by Oliver Funke, Product Manager, Digital Photonic Test, Digital Test Division, Electronic Measurements Group, Agilent Technologies

Electro-optical components like semiconductor lasers, modulators, or PIN diodes are some of the key components in high speed fiber-optic transmission systems. As the bandwidth demand of network service providers puts pressure on the equipment manufacturer to support transmission rates above 10G and up to 100G, the need to exactly characterize these components grows more important than it was in the past. As these components act like up/down converters between RF signals up to 30 GHz and optical signals in the 196 THz range, traceable and repeatable measurement of the conversion efficiency is essential to avoid unnecessary design cycles or discussions about the correct measurement between supplier and vendor of electro-optical components.
